Where the Wild Things Are cake!

i want this!  i am not on this caliber of cake constructing yet, but perhaps next year…

from coco cake’s blog:

Fun fun times! Moishe, the yellow eyed monster dude from “Where The Wild Things Are“, was the request for today’s cake of the day. Chocolate cake with peppermint buttercream covered in fondant, and Coco Cake’s rendition of Moishe’s hilarious face.

To make Moishe, first I baked, cooled and frosted (with peppermint buttercream) a 7 inch chocolate layer cake. Next I covered the cake with white fondant for a smooth finish. Next I made the eyeballs, nose and teeth using fondant. Then I used food coloring to transform the icy cool white buttercream into two colors of “hair.” Using a “grass” frosting tip, I mixed the two frosting colors in the same bag, then piped the hair onto Moishe’s face, making sure to give him long bangs that poke into his eyeballs– just like me!!! Because Moishe has a stripey shirt, I made sure the cake board was striped and the ribbon was striped too.

Star Wars Mighty Muggs Cakes

We’ve all seen a million Star Wars cakes, but Star Wars Mighty Muggs cakes are a new one on me!

Chewie and Storm Trooper cakes

Craftster user doyouloveanapple made these cakes for her partner using a homemade marshmallow fondant. They were based off of the Star Wars Mighty Muggs toys which give them a super cute pop look which lends itself nicely to the cake medium.

The storm trooper was a lemon cake with lemon curd filling and a vanilla butter cream which Chewbacca was a chocolate cake with a chocolate butter cream filling.

doyouloveanapple does give one valuable piece of advice for those looking to make their own Star Wars cakes…

“Fondant that is painted with black food dye does not taste good and dyes your mouth black!”

yikes! good to know!

Aretha Franklin’s birthday cake

So the fabulous Mrs Franklin turned 67 this Monday and was thrown a soiree at Seldom Blues. So what did her cake look like?

Her infamous inaugural hat! Would you have expected anything else?

Im going to go out on a limb and say this is the most amazing cake ever made…the texture, the color, the detail….it must have tasted like angels’ bottoms.

Fail cakes

Hey everyone, sorry the blog has been slow going the past few days. Katie has been sick and dealing with an injured dog (shes doing ok though and is on her way to recovery) and Ive just been slammed at work. So I figured since I dont have time to post up photos or any new recipes Ive been working on (Ive got some good ones stored up!) I’ll share with you something that I may be late passing on, but its new to me!

Fail Cakes

Apparently cake decorating often goes awry with hilarious results and of course the internet is always there to point them out and laugh.

Wal-Mart needs to update their application to require at least an elementary school education

Auto print cake error…makes me want to make a 404 cake

Who doesnt love a good cake on their Dirthday?

Congramations are in order for this cake!

I wonder what Amy bought….

I just dont even know what this one says

I love my grils too!

While “be” is technically not misspelled I fell someone doesnt know what a pun is. Also that bee is freaky looking.

Im actually hoping this isnt a mispelling because Valenstines day would be awesome…imagine an evil stitched together Cupid out for revenge! I think I just came up with the best movie idea EVER!

Hehe…thats what she said.

I could go on for hours with these, but sadly I must get back to work. Have no fear there are plenty more fail cakes to be found here.

happy friday the 13th!

finally, i am posting my amazing creation for my boyfriend’s birthday last friday! if you remember, i always create sweet nerd masterpieces, like the two ‘Lost‘ cakes or the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle cake.

well, this year, i had to pay omage to the release of the ‘Friday the 13th‘ remake!

cinnamon rum cake with vanilla frosting and Jason’s hockey mask!

This cake is not a lie

I love cake. Ok so I dont love eating cake so much as I love looking at cakes. Im obsessed with watching all the different cake competitions on Food Network, Ace of Cakes and wedding cake specials on WE (yes I hate to admit but I occasionally watch WE just for the cakes). I just love watching the amazing artistic creations made out of sugar and flour. Anywho my good friend Jenn tweeted today about the most amazing cake in the history of amazing cakes. Behold…

Its a girl! Its Darth Vader! Its adorable! Im just going to go out on a limb and say this is the best baby shower cake ever. I mean look at the details! Theres ruffles and bows and bottles…and Lord Vader. And lets not overlook the amazing 90s-rific airbrushing with the planet scape in the background. Bravo…bravo. When I decide to squeeze another life form out of my nether regions I will celebrate the occasion with this cake made by

party planning for my boyfriend’s birthday!

in just a few days, my boyfriend, pk, will turn yet another year older. i am throwing him a party at our apartment in celebration and of course, it will be horror themed. in previous years, his birthday has mysteriously coincided with the season premier of ‘Lost.’ therefore, for two years in a row, pk has enjoyed a ‘Lost’ themed birthday, Dharma cakes included:

two years before that, i made a masterpiece teenage mutant ninja turtle cake in the scummiest dorm kitchen of the University of Illinois. sometimes i surprise myself:

this year, i am doing something different. i am making him a ‘Friday the 13th’ cake in celebration of the upcoming remake release next week. decorations and many appetizers will be horror themed as well.

stay tuned for the epic themed party ideas and birthday cake!

Baking for lushes

Yesterday at my office someone brought in margarita cupcakes for my friend Amorena’s birthday. With much skepticism I tried a lick of the bright green frosting. Was it bad? No. Was it good? Not really. It just tasted like a lime frosting with a hint of tequila which didnt really seem to go well with the whole cupcake thing. However, it got me thinking about what other deliciously alcoholic baked goods you could make. So I hit the internet and searched for recipes utilizing some of my favorite drinks as inspiration. The result? Well….Im lets just say Im planning a ladies baking night already ;)

White Russian Cake
whiterussiancake
Ok so Im actually more fond of Black Russians….but the cream in a White Russian just fits better for baking.

Chocolate Pecan Whiskey Pie
whiskeypie
Whiskey and chocolate….what more could a gal want in life?

Rainbow Daiquiri Sorbet

Ok Ok I know…this isn’t technically a baked desert…but growing up my favorite ice cream flavor was always Baskin-Robbins Daiquiri Ice. What 6 year old likes daiquiri flavored sweets?!? Well, I guess that was a sign of my future lushness.

Harvey Wallbanger Cake

For those unfamiliar, a Harvey Wallbanger is basically a Screw Driver with a twist and bit of herbal vanilla hints.

Whiskey Cookies

Mmmm….now if only I could somehow combine these with the bacon cookies I would be all set.

Irish Stout Cake with Whiskey-Sour Icing

Mmmm Whiskey Sour (are you noticing a Whiskey trend here?) a simple classic drink. Why not combine it with cake and been and call it a night? I think I will ^_^

So there are just a few deliciousy boozey baked goods. I’ll try these out with the ladies and report back on our adventure. One thing I want to try and develop myself is a Whiskey and Gingerbread Cookie. I looked all over and couldnt find a recipe for this! Too me, this one makes perfect sense! I mean who doesn’t love a nice glass of Jameson on the rocks with just a splash of ginger? Why not take that and make a cookie?! Im thinking normal gingerbread cookies with a Jameson icing. Mmmm.

Zombie Cake recipes

Yesterday’s Zombie Lawn Ornament sent me on a zombie frenzy looking for more domestic zombies. What I came across surprised and delighted me. The sisters from Theyre Coming to Get You Barbara have posted up the most disgustingly detailed zombie themed cakes…all complete with instructions for making your own.

Zombie Cake

The “field” it is coming up out of is made of homemade French cream candies. The head is a sour cream chocolate chip cake with red dye to create a bloody brain effect. Icing creates the oozing eye socket and the eye itself is a homemade hard candy.

And added bonus is she includes a recipe for Cordial Cherry Eyeballs.

Tasty and gross!

The most gruesome and realistic of all however, is The Thorax Cake.

White cocolate creates the rib cake which encompasses the organs…which are all individual cakes! The heart is an orange cake with raspberry sauce, lungs are an apple spice cake with strawberry sauce,
for the kidneys she made an orange cake with blueberry sauce, stomach is a ginger cake with mango sauce, the liver is a chocolate cake with kiwi sauce and finally for the small intestine a jelly roll with red currant jelly.

These cakes are truly works of zombie art and I plan on trying them all out eventually. For now though I think I’ll start with the Cordial Cherry Eyeballs ;)
