8Bit Heart Cookies

Snack or Die has a new recipe up just in time for Valentines Day!

8Bit Heart Sugar Cookies

Mmmm pixels and sugar, a match made in heaven! If youve been hesitant to try a Snack or Die recipe because you feel your confectionery skills are not up to par, this is surely a good beginners project. Hell all you need to do is buy a vat of pre-made sugar cookie dough, a heart sapped cookie cutter and some M&Ms and youre halfway done! I love that the only problem Jocelyn ran into was getting the right color M&Ms, however her solution was quite clever…and delicious…

“What I ended up doing is pouring a bag of M&Ms into a small dish and ate all the non-red M&Ms. Problem solved.”

Battlestar Galactica premiere party on Friday…

it’s almost here!  that’s right nerds, Battlestar Galactica (BSG) premieres on Friday!  both seanalyn and i are preparing ourselves for this epic event!  i am hosting a BSG party at my apartment and inviting lots of hungry guests.  seanalyn and i will be brainstorming ideas and recipes for our themed party.

i searched around, found some great ideas online, and added seanalyn & mine:

a frakin’ Battlestar Galactica cake

Marisa from slashfood.com posted this amazing edible artwork by local baker/artist Zoë Lukas, who is in the process of opening up her own bakery in Philly.  The chocolate devil’s food cake is ‘filled with raspberry jam and ganache, iced with chocolate buttercream and ganache, decorated with chocolate ships and explosions, silver dragees and silver and gold space dust.’

    the Cylon Jack-O-Lantern

Allison from seriouseats.com posted this incredible masterpiece with a working cylon laser eye.  although not edible, this would make for a great centerpiece at our party!  too bad i’m not that handy at carving pumpkins!

    seanalyn’s idea

i love it!  she plans on taking the infamous Eye of Jupiter that Starbuck consistently obesses over and making a glorious fruit tart out of it.  (she is so clever!)

***pictures of her appetizer will follow after our party

    my idea

i am thinking of taking those Pillsbury Crossiants, stuffing them with crab & cream cheese, and creating foldovers in the shape of cylon raiders.  i’ll give the illusion of their notable ‘laser eye’ with a slice of red pepper.

um, we’ll see how this one turns out!

    lastly, the Battlestar Drinking game…

on this nerdtastic spacecast community forum, i found an awesome thread with some very creative BSG themed drinks, here’s a few i loved:

    1. THE RED DRESS – (AN ODE TO NUMBER SIX)

    · 2 parts Gin

    · 1 part Pomegranate Juice

    · 1 part Cranberry Juice

    · a dash of Grenadine

Stir and Serve with a touch of ice in a slender Collins glass.

    2. TWISTED MESSIAH – (THE BALTAR COMPLEX)

    · 1 part white Tequila

    · 1 part Ouzo

    · 1 part tomato juice

    · a dash of Worcestershire sauce

Shake and serve in an old fashioned glass.

    3. SKINJOB – (CYLON LOVER)

    · 1 part Bailey’s Irish cream

    · 1 part Tequila Rose

    · a dash of Amaretto

Shake and serve in a Shot Glass

what i loved even more is that there is actually a Battlestar Galactica drinking game with rules and everything!

please let us know if you have any creative ideas, thoughts, comments, suggestions, etc.  we absolutely love hearing from you!

drink an Obama americano!

Oh man, i just found out that Krispy Kreme is handing out free Americanos with Barack Obama’s face on them during January 20th: Inauguration day!

i love that Krispy Kreme supports the new president and hands out freebies to show their pride for our nation. not to mention that they also have some AMAZING calorie overdosing heart attack causing donuts that melt in your mouth. mmm…nom nom nom.

anyways, i thought this was such a great way to celebrate a new president: drink his face off!

only a week left and i am already pondering what kind of themed foods i will be preparing for this epic celebration! maybe Obama cookies with his face on ’em????

let me know if you come up with any ideas!

Obligatory Thanksgiving leftovers post

So tomorrow is the big day….the day where we feast on the flesh of a thousand turkeys (or tofurkeys if you so choose). Inevitably there are going to be leftovers, but theres only so many turkey sandwiches and turkey casseroles you can eat before you just can’t take it anymore. Heres a few recipes that take your turkey leftovers one step beyond.

Turkey Curry

Anyone who knows me knows I love curry. This recipe is a quick easy way to reuse your turkey, but totally changing the flavor so no one feels like theyre just having a repeat of Thanksgiving.

Turkey and Broccoli Quiche

The day after Thanksgiving everyone goes into that inevitable food coma…personally I dont feel like eating until midday at least. Why not recycle some of that Turkey into a delicious brunch dish?

Mashed Potato Croquettes

Why should turkey have all the fun? My mom always used to make too much mashed potatoes so we would have a plethora of those left over every year. I’ve always loved croquettes, so just take your potatoes add some spices (I’d throw in some green onions too) and bread and fry the suckers. You could also add salmon or more cheese to create different types of croquettes. These would go great with your turkey curry!

Stuffing Frittata

Stuffing, yet another side dish that usually doesnt get changed too much when it comes to leftovers. But simply by adding some eggs and cheese, you can create a whole new dish. Also perfect for a post turkey coma brunch.

Mashed Potato Pancakes

One of my favorite things to do is stroll over to the local Irish pub and order up a plate of boxty and trout. Boxty is basically just Irish potato pancakes (they are similar to this recipe only a bit of flour and baking soda is added) so you could easily substitute these Mashed Potato Pancakes in. Top them with some smoked trout or salmon and cream and you have an utterly delicious meal.

Leftover Tofurkey Stroganoff

Ah my dear veggie friends…don’t think I forgot about you! Even you can get some mileage out of your tofurkey leftovers! Just mix up the leftover veggie gravy with some garlic, sour cream and mushrooms then pour it all over rice or noodles for instant deliciousness.

Tofurkey Pesto Stuffed Mushrooms

Now this recipe sounds so delicious Im almost jealous that Im not cooking a tofurkey! Pesto, pumpkin seeds and lemon get blended together to create a totally new tofurkey experience. My mouth is watering!

So there you have it, just a few easy and delicious alternatives to reusing your Thanksgiving leftovers. I’ll try and pop in and write another blog before the weekend but no promises since the bacon wrapped turducken is sure to induce a mighty turkey coma. However I will document all our delicious Thanksgiving recipes and share them with you later! Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Baking for lushes

Yesterday at my office someone brought in margarita cupcakes for my friend Amorena’s birthday. With much skepticism I tried a lick of the bright green frosting. Was it bad? No. Was it good? Not really. It just tasted like a lime frosting with a hint of tequila which didnt really seem to go well with the whole cupcake thing. However, it got me thinking about what other deliciously alcoholic baked goods you could make. So I hit the internet and searched for recipes utilizing some of my favorite drinks as inspiration. The result? Well….Im lets just say Im planning a ladies baking night already ;)

White Russian Cake
whiterussiancake
Ok so Im actually more fond of Black Russians….but the cream in a White Russian just fits better for baking.

Chocolate Pecan Whiskey Pie
whiskeypie
Whiskey and chocolate….what more could a gal want in life?

Rainbow Daiquiri Sorbet

Ok Ok I know…this isn’t technically a baked desert…but growing up my favorite ice cream flavor was always Baskin-Robbins Daiquiri Ice. What 6 year old likes daiquiri flavored sweets?!? Well, I guess that was a sign of my future lushness.

Harvey Wallbanger Cake

For those unfamiliar, a Harvey Wallbanger is basically a Screw Driver with a twist and bit of herbal vanilla hints.

Whiskey Cookies

Mmmm….now if only I could somehow combine these with the bacon cookies I would be all set.

Irish Stout Cake with Whiskey-Sour Icing

Mmmm Whiskey Sour (are you noticing a Whiskey trend here?) a simple classic drink. Why not combine it with cake and been and call it a night? I think I will ^_^

So there are just a few deliciousy boozey baked goods. I’ll try these out with the ladies and report back on our adventure. One thing I want to try and develop myself is a Whiskey and Gingerbread Cookie. I looked all over and couldnt find a recipe for this! Too me, this one makes perfect sense! I mean who doesn’t love a nice glass of Jameson on the rocks with just a splash of ginger? Why not take that and make a cookie?! Im thinking normal gingerbread cookies with a Jameson icing. Mmmm.

Sandwhich sushi and other sushi dreams.

I was watching Conan O Brien the other night when domestic guru Martha Stewart herself came on. Now Im not usually much into her cooking, its a bit luncheon-on-the-estate-lawn for my taste, but she did mention a nifty little snack that reminded me of an idea Ive long had (I’ll get to that later in the blog).

behold, Sandwich Sushi!

The basic idea is to flatten a piece of bread and spread some sort of condiment inside and roll it up into a bite sized treat for kids (or adults like me who love bite sized finger foods). I imagine this would be great with peanut butter and celery or apples for a sweeter treat or hummus, sprouts and lemon chicken for something a bit more adult.

Now what this reminded me of was my dream that I have long had yet often been made fun of for…this dream is to one day open an all sushi roll inspired restraint. Of course it would have to have a horribly punny name like Way to Roll or Point of Nori Turn. But anyways, this place would sell only food rolled up like sushi and it would be awesome. Imagine, a Curry Roll having yellow curry potatoes and cauliflower wrapped in naan with a chutney dipping sauce…or chicken mole wrapped in a think home made corn tortilla. Of course the physics of wrapping foods and getting them to stay would take a while to master, but with much time and patience like a ninja, I could succeed.

I did once try making a Breakfast Sushi which was almost a success. I say almost because had I used wider strips of bacon, it wouldve been perfect. What I did was scramble some eggs and home fry some rosemary potatoes. Then I baked the bacon on a baking sheet in the oven (so that it would lay flat) until it was still soft, but cooked through. I spread the eggs an the bacon strips and placed a julienne potato in each, sprinkled a little cheese inside, rolled it up and set it to bake for a few more minutes. I then served it with a spicy hot ketchup sauce. Im going to continue experimenting with this recipe until I perfect it (next time Im going to fry the eggs with rice so they stick better). Once I have, you can be sure I’ll post up instructions.
