Make your own vegetable pasta!

As many know, I am on a wheat free diet for medical reasons so often I find myself having to come up with substitutes for my dishes. Im Italian so I love pasta dishes, but Ive never really liked the taste and texture of pasta…its too bland and gummy. Enter veggie pasta. Veggie pastas are when you use a vegetable to simulate the pasta in your dish. Its far more healthy than the carb rich noodles and I find it much more tasty. The easiest to prepare and most popular is spaghetti squash. The large gourd is cheap and all you have to do is cut it in half, boil it and then scoop out the meat with a fork and it will fall out like noodles.

Cool huh? I use this all the time when I need spaghetti noodles and frankly I like it more than regular spaghetti. Its got a more firm texture and a flavorful nutty taste. Im a big fan of just tossing the noodles with some olive oil and garlic then sprinkling with some fresh Parmesan cheese.

One of my recent discoveries has been the use of zucchini as noodles. All you have to do is take a zucchini and cut the ends off and peel the skin. Then using a potato peeler slice long even strips of the zucchini. About 2 average sized zucchinis makes enough for one serving.

Heres my 12seconds video of how to make the noodles

Cooking Lesson 1: How to make zucchini noodles in 12 seconds! on 12seconds.tv

Once you have a big pile of zucchini noodles you can either quickly boil them our lightly saute them in oil. Be careful not to cook them too long or they will become soft and mushy. All you need to do is get them nice and hot, any longer than that and they will loose their noodle-like texture. I really like using them in a chili and soy stir fry but you can use them in any recipe that calls for flat noodles. So enjoy the healthy and delicious taste of veggie noodles!

DIY LOLcat purse

Ok ok I know LOLcats are sooooooo last season but you still cant help but love this amazing DIY project. Forwarded to me by my good friend Stephanie is this amazing craft project from Alexa Westerfield a.k.a. Swelldesigner.

LOLcat Purse

All the supplies you need to make this lunch box type purse can be purchased at just about any craft store and if you dont have a photo quality printer you can go to Walgreens or Kinkos and get a photo quality print for pretty cheap. Follow these step by step instructions and in a matter of hours you can rock out with your geek out!

Also if you feel the LOLcat trend is soooo last week you can shove any other image you like on there, think about it…a level from your favorite game, your favorite movie or maybe just you and your friends. Here are some Im considering…

Obama + Aretha Hat = FIEEEEEEEEEEERCE

What better way to highlight my epic crush on Edward James Olmos aka Commander Adama than with a sparkly purse

Master Chief in a thong…just because it would be funny and good conversation starter

This is the front runner just because it combines two of my favorite things…Tecate and boobies.

Anyone have any ideas for what they would put on their purse?

DIY Cat Hoodie

Today at work we started up a weekly knitting circle for a bunch of us to sit down and chat while working on our projects. Right now Im embarrassed to say Im knitting a scarf for my cat (it was going to be a headband for me but I decided I like torturing my cat more). My friend Stephanie mentioned a project she saw on Craftlovers that was a DIY knitted cat hoodie so I just had to see it for myself.

Cat Hoodie

So adorable and so hilarious. Im filing this under my list of projects that I can make in order to torture my cat with.

The solution to stinky garlic hands

The other day I got some products from Rochelle Rose in the mail. Im always a fan of anything handmade that uses natural ingredients, especially body products because they seem to dry my skin out less than the chemical packed popular brands so I was excited to try out this product. What I was most excited about was their Kitchen Cafe Soap which boasted the ability to remove tough cooking odors like garlic, fish and onion from your hands.

Well I love cooking, especially with ingredients like garlic and onion that quite often leave me smelling like garlic bread for hours. Don’t get me wrong, I love the smell of garlic…other people don’t seem to like it so much and the smell especially does not play nicely with my other perfumes and lotions (garlic and orchid do not smell good together). Ive tried all the tricks to get rid of tough smells like garlic, but none really seem to work that well.

So last night I decided to put Rochelle Rose’s Cafe Kitchen Soap to the test, and not just any test, but the most hardcore test of scent elimination imaginable….Thai Green Seafood Curry. I love making curries but between the onion, garlic, seafood and curry powder, they are the ultimate in stinking up your hands. The curry was delicious, one of the best I’ve ever made but as usual, I had curry hands. So I gave them a quick rinse with the Cafe Kitchen Soap and I was shocked, not a hint of garlic or curry remained! Now granted I don’t have the greatest sense of smell so I used Cesar as a gauge and even he couldn’t detect a hint of garlic. I even crushed some garlic and rubbed it on my hands just to see how good the soap was and it still removed any trace of garlic.

Needless to say Im hooked. The Cafe Kitchen Soap has a happy home in my kitchen window right above the sink. What’s especially nice about the soap is that even though it has a strong spiced coffee smell when you sniff it, it doesn’t leave your hands smelling overly pungent. In fact, the smell is quite subtle and dissipates fairly soon after leaving you with fresh aroma free hands.

Like all of Rochelle Rose’s products, the Cafe Kitchen Soap is made with all natural ingredients including fresh brewed coffee (there’s even some actual coffee beans in the soap! How awesome is that?!). It retails at $6.00 a bar and can be purchased online or in a few select stores. In my opinion this is definitely a must buy for anyone who frequently cooks with smelly ingredients.

The other products I sampled were the Citron Soap and the Mandarin Yuzu Lotion. Both were lovely with mild scents, plus the rustic look of the Citron Soap looks great in my bathroom soap dish.

T-shirt panties!

On Current today I saw a link to an amazing how to guide for turning those extra t-shirts you have lying around into a cute pair of undies.

Cute huh? We all have piles of shirts that we cant wear for one reason or another (too big, too small, ripped, faded, etc) but you just dont want to get rid of because its a cool design or holds some sentimental value. Well with a little bit of elastic, a sewing machine and about 1 hour you can create cute bum covers out of your beloved tossed aside tees. The guide even describes how to alter the pattern to make boy-shorts, ruffled panties and swim suit bottoms.

Personally I have a giant pile of unused t-shirts (mostly oversized mens gaming t-shirts back from when I worked at 1UP.com)and a panty fetish, so you can bet Im going to be churning out some of these!

My Christmas Tree + geeky gamer ornaments

I just have to show off my Christmas Tree because Im so in love with the thing and although its still a work in progress (collecting and making ornaments takes a while) its coming along quite nicely.

Heres a whole shot of the fat lil bugger. Cesar wanted a knee high tree while I was rooting for waist high or more but when we got on the lot we saw this one and I ran up and hugged it…after that he couldnt say no even though its chest high. Just look how round and fat that tree is! Its perfect!

The first thing I got for the tree were the awesome pop colored balls from Borders…I just loved the color palate…especially the pink!

The star for the top also came from Borders…of course its hot pink….what else do you expect from me?

Most of the other ornaments were either made or ‘found’ ornaments. I love using things like keychains and small toys to make ornaments! My favorite of all would have to be my Animal Crossing house ornaments

When my friend Garnett went to Japan a few years back he brought me the keychains (you can order them from multiple sites online or on ebay). All my life I’ve loved Christmas ornaments that do something…either light up or open up or something. So what I love most about these houses is that they open up to pop out a little Animal Cross character.

Among my other game related ornaments is also a keychain of a Rocket Slime…I cant remember where I got this but its cute and makes a great ornament.

Another one of my favorite ornaments is a keychain (noticing a theme here) of the popular Japanese character RilakkumaI got at a Japanese convenience store in town.

Finally heres an ornament I made myself!

Its a felted penguin that I made using a kit my friend Jenn gave me for my birthday! I just skewered his head with a hook and stuck him on the tree along with a few other felted penguins I made.

This year has been fun because its the first time Im decorating one from scratch and with Cesar…which makes it even more special. In the past Ive used ornaments my mom gave me which were wonderful and very special, but I want to start collecting my own decorations with my own memories that express who I am. Ultimately Christmas Trees are personal and although its fun to buy certain ornaments (like balls and stars) in stores…its nice to find creative ways to make your own. Keychains are honestly one of the best ways to do this because they are basically just ornaments for your keys so just add a hook and they are perfect on a tree! Especially when it comes to video games there are a plethora of cute keychain/ornaments you can order online or find in stores. Last month I spent a while looking for good video game ornaments and only found a handful. It didnt even dawn on me then that the abundance of video game keychains and mini toys are the perfect ornaments! If youre not into video games you can use keychains you already have, maybe that cheesy one your grandma got you from Universal Studios or that silly glitter unicorn one that you just couldnt resist….they add that personal touch and hold memories, which is what an ornament should do. I think when I get home tonight Im going to look through some of our capsule toys from Japan to see what else I can throw on the tree ;)

Look how Christmasy our living room is! Since we already have a red and black color scheme to the room, the bright green tree just makes it super Christmas time.

If anyone else has pictures of trees post them up! I would love to see what other people are doing!

EDIT- Check out the latest addition to my tree! Pardon the shitty photo quality…I had to use my camera phone.

NINJA PLEASE!
