DIY Mobile Bar

This week on Instructables user jamiep posted up instructions for how to make your own Mobile Bar aka BaR2D2.

If only the frat boys of the world could figure out how solder and hard-wire, theres nothing that could stop them from building a beer slinging army of BaR2D2s! Actually, just from skimming the instructions, it doesnt look like a terribly complicated project. In fact with some elbow crease and patience just about anyone could construct this project even if they’ve never worked with robotics before. The creator of this project described BaR2D2 as “is a radio-controlled, mobile bar that features a motorized beer elevator, motorized ice/mixer drawer, six-bottle shot dispenser, and sound activated neon lighting.” Apparently its also “driveable” so you can “take the party on the road.” Im not exactly sure how this is drivable, but I can only hope that they mean you can ride it home on autopilot after you get to drunk to drive.

Below is a video of BaR2D2 in action and click here for step by step instructions to make your own.

My Christmas Tree + geeky gamer ornaments

I just have to show off my Christmas Tree because Im so in love with the thing and although its still a work in progress (collecting and making ornaments takes a while) its coming along quite nicely.

Heres a whole shot of the fat lil bugger. Cesar wanted a knee high tree while I was rooting for waist high or more but when we got on the lot we saw this one and I ran up and hugged it…after that he couldnt say no even though its chest high. Just look how round and fat that tree is! Its perfect!

The first thing I got for the tree were the awesome pop colored balls from Borders…I just loved the color palate…especially the pink!

The star for the top also came from Borders…of course its hot pink….what else do you expect from me?

Most of the other ornaments were either made or ‘found’ ornaments. I love using things like keychains and small toys to make ornaments! My favorite of all would have to be my Animal Crossing house ornaments

When my friend Garnett went to Japan a few years back he brought me the keychains (you can order them from multiple sites online or on ebay). All my life I’ve loved Christmas ornaments that do something…either light up or open up or something. So what I love most about these houses is that they open up to pop out a little Animal Cross character.

Among my other game related ornaments is also a keychain of a Rocket Slime…I cant remember where I got this but its cute and makes a great ornament.

Another one of my favorite ornaments is a keychain (noticing a theme here) of the popular Japanese character RilakkumaI got at a Japanese convenience store in town.

Finally heres an ornament I made myself!

Its a felted penguin that I made using a kit my friend Jenn gave me for my birthday! I just skewered his head with a hook and stuck him on the tree along with a few other felted penguins I made.

This year has been fun because its the first time Im decorating one from scratch and with Cesar…which makes it even more special. In the past Ive used ornaments my mom gave me which were wonderful and very special, but I want to start collecting my own decorations with my own memories that express who I am. Ultimately Christmas Trees are personal and although its fun to buy certain ornaments (like balls and stars) in stores…its nice to find creative ways to make your own. Keychains are honestly one of the best ways to do this because they are basically just ornaments for your keys so just add a hook and they are perfect on a tree! Especially when it comes to video games there are a plethora of cute keychain/ornaments you can order online or find in stores. Last month I spent a while looking for good video game ornaments and only found a handful. It didnt even dawn on me then that the abundance of video game keychains and mini toys are the perfect ornaments! If youre not into video games you can use keychains you already have, maybe that cheesy one your grandma got you from Universal Studios or that silly glitter unicorn one that you just couldnt resist….they add that personal touch and hold memories, which is what an ornament should do. I think when I get home tonight Im going to look through some of our capsule toys from Japan to see what else I can throw on the tree ;)

Look how Christmasy our living room is! Since we already have a red and black color scheme to the room, the bright green tree just makes it super Christmas time.

If anyone else has pictures of trees post them up! I would love to see what other people are doing!

EDIT- Check out the latest addition to my tree! Pardon the shitty photo quality…I had to use my camera phone.

NINJA PLEASE!

Unconventionally awesome shower curtains

I dont know why I woke up this morning thinking about shower curtains….I dont even have one! (we have a glass shower door). But I decided to take to the internet and look up the weirdest most fabulously awesome shower curtains and this is what I came up with.

Serial Killer Shower Curtain

For those with a Hitchcokian fetish these are pretty damn awesome. Would go nicely with some red towels.

Zelda Triforce Curtain

Hand painted by a seller on ebay (only a few more days left on the auction!) its a simple and geeky way to spice up your bathroom. This seller has tons of other hand painted curtains including this awesome Batman silhouette curtain.

Periodic Table of Elements Curtain

I could never get this curtain simply because I would spend about an hour in the shower looking up all the ingredients in my shampoo.

Unikko Shower Curtains

Ok I really just like these because they make me think of LocoRoco.

Weather Cycle Shower Curtain

More educational shower curtains! Who knew? Ok so Im sure all of us know the weather cycle by now…but it still makes for an awesome childlike shower curtain.

Dinosaurs Curtain

Because dinosaurs are fucking awesome and screw you if you disagree! PS- Why is there a penguin in a dinosaur costume in the Triassic row??

DIY geek ornaments

Recently I posted about some adorable video game ornaments you can purchase online, but what about those of you who want to make your own? Well I stumbled across an amazing list of DIY geek ornaments on Geek Ware that will give you something eco friendly to do with that old keyboard or computer part.

Disk Christmas Box Ornaments

Old disks plus some ribbon and glue is all it takes. If you dont have any old diskettes lying around Im sure one of those useless zip disks would work (remember those?!).

Space Bar Icicles

So cute! It took me a minute to figure out what this ornament was even made out of!

Santa Mice

We all have about a dozen old mice lying around, give them a happy new home on your tree!

Keboard Word Ornaments

This is probably my favorite of all the crafts. They are so cute and so simple, any mom would be thrilled to hang one from her tree! (hint hint gift ideas for you crafty kids out there).

Cooking on my DS?!

No, Im not talking about Cooking Mama (although I do love that game) Im talking about cookbooks for the DS. When I was in Japan one of the things I envied in the game shops was the sheer number of cookbooks for DS. Walking down the aisles of the many electronic shops in Akihabara here were dozens and dozens of them, sadly my total lack of reading any Japanese prevented me from picking any of them up. However when I was out shopping this weekend I saw Personal Trainer: Cooking available for the DS and quickly snatched it up.

I LOVE THIS PROGRAM! There just wanted to get that out of the way before I go any further. This is seriously such an amazing program and incredible for the $19 sticker price (by the way, I’m saying program because this isn’t a game so much as a computer application). Personal Trainer: Cooking features over 240 recipes from all over the world all with step by step instructions to help you create spectacular meals.

The best part of this program is the attention to little details that they put into it. If you are making Spinach Namul and don’t know how to blanch spinach, in the middle of the recipe it will give you the option to click on a mini guide to perfectly blanching spinach. There are even videos for some preparation tips, like how to clean a trout or perfectly dice garlic. Another nice touch is the kitchen timer that will pop up in the middle of you cooking steps and it will be automatically preset with the time needed for that recipe. You can also adjust the number of servings to be either 1, 2, 4 or 6 and it will automatically adjust the recipe accordingly.

Example of cooking video….look REAL people! Not cartoons!!

However, the greatest feature of all would have to be the voice control option that lets you repeat a step, go back or move on to the next without ever touching your DS (trust me chicken grease and a touch screen don’t mix). My biggest gripe with cook books is having to constantly dry my hands so I can look up the next step. With Personal Trainer: Cooking I can just say the word and it reads off the steps too me along with photos to illustrate the task.

The step menu allows you to pick up where you left off or skip ahead.

Searching on this program is also far better than any cook book because aside from searching by region or ingredient you can get really specific. To decide Monday night’s dinner I looked up by ingredient and calorie count (after eating heavy foods over the holiday I wanted something light). We have a ton of cucumber so I put that in and the result was a Chinese dish called Bang Bang Chicken which features a spicy sesame sauce and cucumber slices. It was delicious! Tonight I decided I want to cook some gorgeous salmon steaks that we have in the fridge, so I found a nice French recipe for Salmon with Green Sauce and a side of ratatouille to accompany it.

When you are looking at a recipe it displays the ingredients and allows you to check off ones that you are missing and it creates a shopping list to take with you to the store! But, lets say you’re at the store and you don’t know what parsley looks like, well it has photos of all the ingredients to help you along. Or what if you get to the store and they are out of an ingredient? Many ingredients have substitution suggestions like using unsweetened peanut butter if you can’t find sesame paste. Another nice feature is you can set the program to exclude certain ingredients. So if you are like my friend Becky and unfortunately unable to eat onions, with a click of a button you can make sure no onion recipes ever grace your DS.

You can use the map to look around the world to find your next meal! All the meals display a picture along with calories, time needed to cook and a short description.

The only thing that Personal Trainer: Cooking doesn’t have that I would like is a meal planner where you could schedule out the recipes you want to cook for certain days. If it had this feature, it would be the most perfect program ever! I am able to somewhat simulate this by adding a note to the recipes I want to use saying “Thursday night dinner” and I can then filter the recipes by notes. Its not the best solution but it works.

Another nice section is the Homemade Ingredients which teaches you how to make basic stuff like pizza dough or Béchamel sauce.

Overall, what I like most about Personal Trainer: Cooking is that they didn’t half-ass the game. They couldve easily shat out a bunch of recipes that you just tap through, but they didn’t go that route. All the little details and perks are what make this one step above your average print cookbook. They really thought about everything that someone would want or need in the kitchen. Hopefully this will inspire more cooking programs for the DS and PSP, I would also love to see celebrity sponsored editions (ahem Alton Brown’s Cooking for DS please!). Apparently a program called Whats Cooking? With Jamie Oliver did come out recently so I am now on the hunt for a copy of that (although I’ve heard that one isn’t quite as good). Honestly I would buy just about any other DS cookbook as long as its even half as good as Personal Trainer: Cooking. If I were to score this program I would undoubtedly give it an A!

Best Best Video Game Ornaments

As promised in yesterday Best Worst Video Game Ornaments heres a list of decorations for your tree that most likely wont make you cringe! Yet again…no particular order ;)

Mini NES Console and Controllers Ornament

This itty bitty clay pile of cuteness made by Etsy seller TheClayCollection specializes in SUPER tiny detailed creations. Their NES ornament is great because its incredibly accurately detailed and has just the right touch of holiday flare. Sadly this specific one sold out, but if you look at the seller’s store they have other itty bitty gaming ornaments and jewelry including the tiniest Playstation boxes youve ever seen.

Hallmark Pac-Man Arcade Ornament

ITS A MINI ARCADE CABINET!!! It lights up and plays sounds from the original arcade game!!! Do I even need to explain why this is so awesome?!

Circuitboard Heart Ornament Set

For the PC gamer in your life who is a romantic at heart these are simple but cute matching ornaments. They also come in more traditional Christmas shapes like tree, star and bell.

Bub and Bob from Bubble Bobble

Ok so first of all these arent technically ornaments…but you could easily slip a hook on the top of them. These are needle felted creations by Etsy seller PoorLulu. She has many other adorable felted retro gaming creations like Toad, Yoshi, and Mario. Dont look a the Princess Peach tho…something went terribly wrong there….but its not her fault because needle felting delicate details like Princess Peach has is SUUUUUPER hard. Still the rest are spot on and super adorable.

Mario Star Christmas Hanger

Simple, classic and cute. Yet another Etsy seller, Spugmeistress creates cute 8-bit creations using hama beads (we all made something with those when we were a kid!). I love this Mario Star because its a classic Christmas shape but still video game relates….plus it glows in the dark!!

So what have we learned with these two posts? First of all Etsy > Cafepress….I think thats plainly obvious. Second, when it comes to video game decorations, keep them simple, iconic and retro. Don’t try to force it with some “hip gamer slang” because then it just comes off fake….stick with icons as they already exist….they are iconic for a reason ;)

Best Worst Video Game Ornaments

So today I got in the holiday spirit and purchased a mini hot pink sparkly Christmas tree and decorated it with some brightly colored stars. I couldnt help but wonder if there were some video game ornaments I could purchase for it….sadly the ornaments I found online we less than awesome. Here are my 5 Best Worst Video Game Ornaments (in no particular order).

Personalized Clay Gamer Ornaments

Words cannot describe how truly hideous these things are. Im not sure what kind of controller these kids are playing with but I can only imagine that it is the result of some NES controller developing a malignant tumor. That being said these kids look like they have face tumors. I dub this the tumor ornament!

Gamer Ball

Im not going to even write anything for this one myself…rather I will just copy the description from the site becuase it is far more funny than anything I could ever write.

“this 3″ ornament features several tongue-in-cheek phrases as well as the title Video Gamer printed in ravishing red along a smooth pearl surface.
Phrases include:
I’m taking it to the next level
Don’t worry… I have extra lives
My thumbs are in great shape
My goal… 100% completion
I wish life had cheat codes
Eat… Sleep… Play games… Repeat”

I Am A Video Game Champion

I love cafepress…it allows anyone with a photo editing program to make truly hideous creation that no one would want to purchase. Now parents everywhere can embarrass and further alienate their 13 year old level 75 Mage.

Video Game Master! Personalized Christmas Ornament

Little Edward here is so good at games he can play them with his eyes closed! Use the force Edward! The force!

Got Game?

Ok its almost too easy to make fun of cafepress items…its like shooting fish in a barrel. But I just couldn’t pass this one up, especially with the unlicensed Xbox rings rip off. I do give them points for their amazing Want To Play Scrabble Moose though.

Thankfully during my search I did stumble across a few adorably cute video game ornaments…but you’ll have to wait till tomorrow for those ;)

Cooking Mama: The Unauthorized PETA Edition.

This morning my friend pointed me in the direction of what may be the most ridiculous thing ever…

Cooking Mama: Mama Kills Animals

Basically the game has you making a delicious turkey dinner…but instead of sweet innocent mama you have A BLOOD THIRSTY HELL DEMON WITH BLOOD DRIPPING FROM HER ARMS AS SHE BUTCHERS INNOCENT TURKEYS! rawwwwr!

Once again PETA is trying their tactic of gross out and shock in order to convert people to veganism…only it doesnt quite work when its a brightly colored flash game. (which by the way the game sucks…its really hastily and poorly designed).

Im all for not eating meat…I was a vegetarian for 6 years and havent eaten any red meat in over 9 years..but come on PETA just cut it out and quit giving all vegetarians and vegans a bad name. You are just a parody of yourself at this point (especially after that Ben and Jerry’s boobie milk stunt) so please just slink off quietly into the good night while you still have some shred of dignity left.

I guess the other reason why I find this game so stupid is not only the blatant copyright infringement (countdown to lawsuit in 3….2…..) but the fact that I firmly believe all turkeys should die. Not because I think turkey is particularly tasty or anything, but because turkeys are the dumbest most annoying birds on the planet and contribute absolutely nothing. Someone show me how turkeys are vital to the cycle of life…really what do they do? Aside from humans not many animals eat them and they arent like keeping any species in a population check. Honestly I think if all turkeys disappeared the world would be unchanged aside from Thanksgiving. I guess its also because I have a bias…my old college had wild turkeys roaming around the campus and they would always run out in front of our cars and we would have to slam on the brakes to avoid hitting them. Then they would just sit in the road and flap their wings tying to fly (which if you’ve never seen a turkey try to fly, its the most pathetic thing on earth) instead of getting out of the way. They nearly caused so many accidents and made me late for class all the time, I didnt eat poultry back then and I still wanted to strangle them! Sorry about the rant but I just REALLY hate turkeys.

So in conclusion, PETA STFU seriously and enjoy your Majesco lawsuit!
